Junior Development is an invitation only program for skaters who have participated in the CanSkate program and show interest and ability beyond the recreational level. Skaters may be any age.

Skaters in Junior Development continue to work on the advanced CanSkate badges. There are six stages in CanSkate, each with their own ribbons and badge. For more information, check out our CanSkate page. Skaters who have completed the CanSkate program move on to the StarSkate program. In the StarSkate program, skaters move through the levels after completing tests and/or competing in competitions. More information on the tests is available on our test fee page.

The Junior and Star 1 skaters share a practice time. During their session, through a combination of coached lessons and individual practice time, the skaters work toward their individual goals. They can skate one day a week (on Sunday or Thursday), or two days a week (on Sunday and Thursday). 

Skaters must wear a CSA-approved hockey helmet until they have passed CanSkate Stage 5. Once they are allowed to skate without a helmet, it is recommended that they continue to wear head protection in the form of a ForceField Sweatband.

Skaters in this program, and all StarSkate programs, are expected to have proper figure skates.

StarSkate 2-5

Skaters will be invited to register for the Star 2-5 session when they have passed all three Star 1 tests.

The Star 2-5 program introduces participants to basic figure skating elements to create the foundation for singles, pairs, ice dance and synchronized skating.

Skaters in Star 2-5 will participate in group lessons, private instruction, and independent practice time. Any time spent with a coach will be billed to the skater, with the bill for group lessons being divided up between each skater in the group. The coach that provided the instruction for your skater will send you an invoice for their time. It is important to communicate with the coach what your budget is for private coaching.

Skaters move through the levels by completing tests administered by their coaches when they are ready.

Skaters in this program can choose to skate 1, 2, or 3, times during the week. We have ice time available on Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays.

StarSkate 5+

Star 5+ is an assessment and event structure for skaters who completed the Star 1-5 Program. This structure builds on the skills acquired in Star 1-5 and introduces skaters to more advanced figure skating elements.

Skaters in Star 5+ will participate in some group classes and their own private instruction which will be billed separately from the ice time that is paid for at registration. The coach that provided the private instruction for your skater will send you an invoice for their time.

Skaters move up through the levels by attending a test day where they will sign up for tests to be assessed by an outside evaluator.

Skaters in this program can choose to skate 1, 2, or 3, times during the week. We have ice time available on Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays.
